Severians have only one formal god, Oetra. Beings of the New Continent believe in thousands of different ones. Many of them exist as genuine godly powers, others have no ability to answer prayers delivered to them, still others don't exist at all. Notable gods include:
The most powerful single creature in the world, and the creator of all life on it. Also the most commonly worshipped creature on the New Continent. She is no longer the goddess of most humans, as they escaped her primitive domain and to a more comfortable and safer civilised society. She has only recently manifested her physical form, living who-knows-where before then. Although it's possible that a properly prepared Royal Imp of the highest power might just defeat her in a true, no-holds-barred fight, the point is moot because neither she nor they have much interest in fighting. She is scheming to increase her influence over humans, or stop them being humans somehow. Insatiably promiscuous.
The goddess of civilisation. Hasn't physically appeared in the world, and is certainly not a creature, but she's been described here anyway. Dresses in white and carries a harshly bright lantern that scrapes away whimsy, dream and illusion wherever it's light hits. Strict and uncompromising, but clearly shines with the higher thought that she inspires. Has a rather strange secret that says more about those that worship her, rather than the goddess herself: she doesn't exist and never actually has. She was completely made up by humans desperate to escape from chaotic nature.
