Continents of Oerus

Most of my stories take place on two continents in this world.

Severus

Like the word Oerus, Severus means Everywhere And Everything in an even older tongue, and it stuck even when people realised the oceans were not endless but led to other lands. This is a civilised continent, blanketed by human kingdoms, a place of organised religion (Oetra) and feudal structure. Intelligent animals are rare here, or at least humans that stay in their cities think so. There are huge expanses of primeval, primitive areas away from the villages and towers of the humans, but civilised humans predictably stay clear of these.

Despite the medieval power structure, technology in some places has reached the industrial, even internal combustion age. It would be possible to make machine guns and armoured tanks, but there doesn't seem to be any market for devices that inaccurately poke holes in things, or use huge amounts of steam or distilled oil to move very slowly and very loudly. People know of magic, but those that can control it wouldn't dream of using it like another, mundane branch of technology. Magic is whimsical, unreliable stuff, and no-one would dare use it to power a lift, for example.

The New Continent (as named by the Severians)

Much more primitive and thickly forested. Natives to the New Continent are arranged in tribes, mostly trusting of the Severians who have only recently started to explore their shores. The Severians haven't come to conquer this land, but they do map and colonise these new shores, and educate any natives curious enough. Missionaries and entire convents have come to the land to preach to the savages, with varying success. Humans are by no means the only dominant species on this land. There is a wide variety of intelligent reptiles, both 'pedigrees' and crossbreeds between each other and the humans and animals of the forest. Other intelligent species, not related to scaly creatures may also be present, in the vast unexplored areas of the New Continent, or emigrating from completely unknown countries.
